THE BUSINESS OF AVIATION
Patterson Island’s Aviation Revival
Patterson Island, tucked within Georgia’s picturesque Golden Isles, is on its way to becoming a haven for aviators, thanks to the efforts of the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) and the Day family. The island, known for its natural beauty and rich history, was once accessible by a 2,000-foot grass airstrip but fell into disrepair, leaving boats as the only mode of access. Now, with the help of volunteers, grants and a lot of dedication, the airstrip is being revitalized, offering pilots a safe and scenic landing option amidst marshland tranquility.
The RAF conducted a work party September 14, where volunteers helped to remove the debris from the professional tree cutters that were hired.
The restoration process has been no small feat. Volunteers and professionals worked together to widen the runway from a narrow 50 feet to 150 feet, removing debris and addressing problem areas like ruts. RAF Georgia liaison Kevin Barry highlighted the runway’s potential as a standout in the region, describing it as a “crown jewel of the Georgia coast.” With work under budget, remaining funds will go toward further enhancements, including a windsock, tent platforms and even a flush toilet and hot shower, adding practical touches to this backcountry gem.
The island’s current structures, the Big House and the Cottage, date back to the early 1900s. They have been restored and are available for nightly rental.
Beyond its aviation appeal, Patterson Island offers an unmatched blend of natural and historical allure. Spanning 50 acres, the island features restored early 1900s structures, such as the “Big House” and the “Cottage,” which are available for rental. Wildlife thrives in the area, with bald eagles, great horned owls and migratory storks making regular appearances. The Day family, who purchased the island in 2023, has worked tirelessly to preserve its charm while opening it up for weddings, retreats and other gatherings, ensuring visitors experience both its historical significance and natural beauty.
While recent hurricane damage has temporarily delayed full access, the island’s transformation is well underway. Patterson Island’s unique mix of restored aviation infrastructure, wildlife-rich preserves and proximity to coastal attractions like Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island promises to make it a destination like no other. For pilots and adventurers alike, Patterson is poised to become a must-visit retreat, seamlessly blending rustic charm with modern convenience.

This blue-and-gold beauty, once used to train Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), boasts a rich history and no known crash record. With an $8,000 fundraising goal, the CAF aims to complete its first restoration project by summer 2025, ensuring this iconic aircraft returns to the skies once again.
🛩️ Joby Aviation has secured FAA approval to launch a flight academy for its electric VTOL air taxis, training pilots for its 200-mph S4 model. With plans to debut air taxi services next year, Joby is building a pilot pipeline under new FAA powered-lift regulations. The company’s recent safety milestones bring it closer to revolutionizing urban air mobility.
🛩️ Sergey Nechaev, a dual U.S.-Russian citizen, was arrested for attempting to smuggle two Cessnas to a Russian flight school via Armenia without the required export license. Charged with export violations and falsifying documents, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

United Airlines, soaring strong for nearly a century, has claimed the title of best-performing U.S. airline stock this year. However, it’s eyeing an even bigger prize: dethroning Delta as the most profitable airline. With ambitious plans to attract customers, United is firmly setting its sights on the top spot.
