National Celebration of General Aviation D.C. Flyover... What a Mouthful

Good morning! Did you know that [apparently] May has been declared “General Aviation Month?” It’s true — dozens of elected officials across the country have issued formal declarations celebrating general aviation in honor of the upcoming D.C. flyover on May 11th.

I’m only now slightly confused, because Colorado already declared October to be General Aviation Appreciation Month, California made their’s April and both Washington and Indiana settled on June… ✈

Wings Over Washington

AOPA recently conducted a successful test flight in preparation for the National Celebration of General Aviation D.C. Flyover (yes, that’s the official title), scheduled for May 11th. Four aircraft, led by AOPA President Mark Baker, flew the planned route over the National Mall. The upcoming event commemorates AOPA's 85th anniversary and will feature over 60 aircraft representing various chapters of general aviation history, showcasing advancements in technology and safety.

This meticulously planned flyover will navigate through the most restricted airspace in the country (don’t worry, the Secret Service knows). If you can’t make it to D.C., be sure to watch the live broadcast on AOPA's YouTube channel.

Call to Action: Bears Ears National Monument

The Recreational Aviation Foundation is calling on pilots to rally for the preservation of eighteen historic backcountry airstrips in Utah's Bears Ears National Monument. With the Bureau of Land Management proposing restrictions to only two airstrips, the RAF is urging public comments to influence the final decision.

Even though these airstrips have been in use for 40-70 years, they stand at risk of closure without proper evaluation. Pilots have until June 11th to voice their support, highlighting the airstrips' role in providing access for recreational use, aiding emergency response and promoting minimal environmental impact.

Join the effort to protect these invaluable aviation treasures and ensure continued access to Utah's backcountry. And without backcountry airstrips, there would be no bush flying YouTube representing the lower 48!
